About Us

Erika Flax, Licensed Clinical Social Worker

“The pessimist complains about the wind, the optimist expects it to change, but the realist adjusts the sails” - William Arthur Ward

Growing up sailing the Neuse River of North Carolina and the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, this is a quote that has resonated with me for years. When one is out on the water, the wind is a necessity, a luxury, and, at its extreme, a hazard and a burden. This translates so beautifully to life and my work as a therapist, because I have made it my mission to help people use the resources they have to reach their destinations. We may not have all of the resources we desire or deserve, but using my strengths based approach to counseling, we can realize and maximize the tools, resources, and supports we have available to us.

This approach lends itself most beautifully to my work with individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, women’s issues, pre and post partum related challenges, couples counseling and eating disorders. My job is to help you understand and manage what is within your control and accept what is not, in a space that is supportive, safe, and comfortable. Additionally, I can support you through recovery from substance abuse. It’s an honor to be a part of your journey of healing, recovery, and wellness.

I earned my Masters of Science in Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin in 2011. Since then, I have been providing individual and family therapy to at-risk youth and crisis prevention support to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I have also had the privilege to serve individuals with all mental health diagnoses at the Partial Hospitalization level of care, was the program director of a residential treatment center serving adolescents with eating disorders, and have been providing outpatient counseling services for the past 3 years.

Many clients come to me reporting that while it may not be their first time in counseling, they are needing more tools, skills, and change in their lives. It is my job to provide you with a safe environment where I can push you to make changes so you can find happiness in your own life. Most of my clients report a decrease in severity and frequency of symptoms and an increased ability to tolerate the challenges life presents.

I am currently accepting new individual clients and couples and will work with you one on one, or in your relationship, to develop an individually tailored treatment plan to help you learn to adjust your own sails and reach your goal destination. In addition to a strengths based orientation, I approach healing and recovery with a strong foundation in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and approach eating disorders with a Health at Every Size perspective. I am excited to join you on your journey to healing, recovery, and wellness. I am also accepting supervisees in social work working on licensure.
